Vacancy under the project “Strengthening in-situ conservation of small cats and other elusive wild mammals in Meghalaya”

Project Description: The project “Strengthening in-situ conservation of small cats and other elusive wild mammals in Meghalaya” is being implemented by the Meghalaya Forest Department and Global Tiger Forum (GTF), in collaboration with the MoEF&CC, Government of India. The project is aimed towards understanding the distribution, status, co-occurrence of small wild cats and some elusive mammals, while evolving an action plan for community stewardship with livelihood options.

PositionTechnical Consultant (Monitoring and Ecology) – 1
Essential Qualification (EQ)Post graduation in the field of Wildlife/Biodiversity/Environment Science/RS-GIS/other related disciplines
Description of Worki) Design field surveys and impart training to the field teams
ii) Coordinate and Supervise field surveys in Meghalaya for primary and secondary data collection
iii) Coordinate field survey for investigating ecological status of the small cats and other elusive mammals
iv) Coordinate camera trapping work in the project area
v) Any other tasks assigned by the GTF
Experiencei) 2-3 years’ experience in related field(s)
ii) Experience in Habitat Modelling/ Ecological-Informatics/ Ecological Spatial Modelling-GIS
iii) Experience in designing surveys and handing/installation of camera traps
iv) Experience in writing scientific manuscripts, and good knowledge of wildlife, flora and fauna
v) Proficiency in MS office and data analysis programs
vi) Excellent communication and scientific writing skills
DurationOne year with scope of extension based on satisfactory performance
Duty LocationDelhi/Meghalaya (with possibility of travel to the project site/HQ as and when required)

Opportunity for paid field internships in Uttarakhand

Applications are invited for paid field internships

Duration: 2-3 months (can be extended based on requirement)

Terms of Reference

Essential Qualification: (At least) A bachelor’s degree in Botany, Zoology, Wildlife, Environmental Sciences, or related fields.

Desirable Qualification:

  1. Basic knowledge about the local flora, fauna and natural history of the project landscape would be ideal but not mandatory.
  2. Candidates with prior experience in conducting forest surveys/sampling, data collection and interpretation will be preferred.

Requirements:

  1. Potential candidates should be physically fit and possess the ability to work across difficult or rugged terrains with sub-optimal field conditions with limited resources/connectivity. Prior experience in ecological sampling would be desirable.
  2. Candidates with a prior experience of working in the respective landscapes and knowledge of local language would be an added advantage.
  3. Good communication skills
  4. Since this is a continuous field work position, the intern will be posted full-time on field and has to virtually report/communicate to the headquarter at least once a week

Activities/Responsibilities:

  1. Travel to field sites for primary data collection (ecological and socio-economic data) and interaction with stakeholders across various districts of Uttarakhand.
  2. Collection of secondary data pertaining to villages, reserve forests, policies etc. of the underlying districts.
  3. Assist in report writing.
  4. Compiled information in the form of a report on the above activities to be submitted to the Senior Coordinator, GTF

Remuneration: The GTF will provide a monthly stipend of Rs.12,000/- and a certificate post completion of internship and submission of report. Basic food and accommodation, travel allowance, and other field logistics will be taken care of by the GTF/Project, however field gear and other personal requirements/equipment shall not be provided.
