Conservation Technology

To enhance tiger conservation and protection measures

The Global Tiger Forum (GTF) has been at the forefront of promoting technological innovations to enhance tiger conservation and protection measures across tiger range countries. One of its key initiatives includes the deployment and training.

AI based camera traps – Real-time, AI-enabled camera alert system designed to detect intrusions such as poachers or unauthorized movement in sensitive tiger habitats. GTF has worked closely with forest departments and partner organizations to pilot and scale this technology in high-risk corridors and protected areas. By enabling rapid detection and immediate response, such a system enhances the effectiveness of patrolling teams and helps avert potential threats before damage occurs.

In addition, GTF, along with NTCA and WII has championed the adoption of tools like M-STrIPES (Monitoring System for Tigers – Intensive Protection and Ecological Status), which digitizes field data collection and streamlines patrolling operations. GTF has supported capacity-building programs across multiple tiger landscapes to train frontline staff and managers in the effective use of M-STrIPES for habitat monitoring, tiger sightings, and threat documentation. Complementing this, the forum has promoted the use of drones and geospatial tools for managing human-wildlife conflict (HWC), especially in areas with recurring crop damage or livestock predation. Drone surveillance helps in early detection of wildlife movement near villages, allowing for timely alerts and preventive measures. By integrating technology into daily conservation practice, GTF is strengthening real-time decision-making, enhancing frontline capabilities, and ensuring data-driven management for tiger conservation.
